Product details & specifications

PRM is a resource management tool that allows system administrators to fine-tune how resources are used on a server. This enables the administrator to ensure that critical applications and users get system resources in a timely manner.

What can PRM do for me?

PRM helps you:

  • Optimize use of CPU, memory (private and shared), and disk bandwidth resources
  • Create PRM groups associated with a processor set (pset)
  • Isolate PRM groups using psets and memory resource controls
  • Manage resources inside virtual machines
  • Allocate resources to business-critical applications, reflecting real business needs
  • Prioritize system use based on workgroups
  • Allocate resources on a shared server based on budgeting
  • Dynamically modify resource allocations to adapt to changing business needs
  • Limit resource use by relatively low-priority users and applications during times of heavy demand
  • Monitor and adjust system performance through the HP GlancePlus product

What do I need to use PRM C.03.04?

In addition to the system requirements listed below, see the Notes in the "How do I get PRM?" section below.

PRM C.03.04 is supported on HP 9000 servers running HP-UX 11i v1 (B.11.11), HP-UX 11i v2 (B.11.23), or HP-UX 11i v3 (B.11.31). It is also supported on HP Integrity servers running HP-UX 11i v2 or HP-UX 11i v3.

To use PRM C.03.04, you need:

  • The PRM-Sw-Krn.PRM-KRN fileset version C.01.04, available in bundle PRMKernelSW version C.03.04*
  • The PRMLibraries bundle version C.03.04*
  • Memory
    • HP-UX 11i v1 and HP-UX 11i v2: 1.1 Mbytes (40 Mbytes if using the SMH GUI or SIM GUI)
    • HP-UX 11i v3: 3 Gbytes
  • Disk space: 9 Mbytes
  • Logical Volume Manager (LVM) or VERITAS Volume Manager (VxVM) for PRM's disk bandwidth management

*This bundle is included in the depot file you download to get the PRM trial software. (The depot file also includes the bundle PRMSIMTools, which provides the PRM GUI in HP Systems Insight Manager.)

Where can I learn how to use PRM?

  • The PRM manpages included with the software
See prm(1) for an overview of PRM and for pointers to other manpages.
  • PRM Documentation (
This page has PDF and HTML versions of the following documents:
    • HP Process Resource Manager User's Guide
    • PRM release notes

How do I get PRM?

  • HP-UX 11i v1 and HP-UX 11i v2

Download a PRM trial version by selecting the [Receive for Trial] button below. Be sure that your browser has JavaScript enabled before you start the download.

  • HP-UX 11i v3

The full PRM product (non-trial version) is included in the Base Operating Environment (Base OE) starting in March 2008.

  • The product is licensed for a 90-day trial period.

  • Ensure the PRM-KRN fileset version C.01.04 is installed by using the following command:

    /usr/sbin/swlist -l fileset | grep PRM-KRN

    The output should be:

    PRM-Sw-Krn.PRM-KRN C.01.04 Process Resource Manager PRM-KRN fileset

If the proper version of the fileset is not present, it is available in the PRMKernelSW bundle from the depot file you download.

Note: Installing PRM requires you to reboot your system if the appropriate version of the PRM-KRN fileset is not installed.

  • During or after the trial, you can:
    • Easily buy or enable the full PRM product without removing the trial version
    • Remove the trial version using SD if desired (You can remove the B3835DA_TRY bundle without rebooting. Removing the PRMKernelSW bundle though, which contains the PRM-KRN fileset, requires a reboot. However, you can safely leave PRMKernelSW installed on your system without PRM installed.)

  • Installation and patch information is available in the PRM Release Notes.
