HPE CIFS Product Suite

Obsolescence plan for CIFS Client:

CIFS Client for all releases of HP-UX will reach end of support by July 2015. NFS can be used as an alternative to mount remote filesystems on HP-UX. For more information, see "Comparison of HP-UX CIFS Client and HP-UX NFS Client" white paper which is available at

The HPE CIFS Client and Server suite provide a broad and flexible range of Unix-Windows interoperability strategies for HP-UX. The Common Internet File System (CIFS) is the native networking protocol in Microsoft Windows operating systems. Hewlett Packard's CIFS product suite integrates HP-UX with Microsoft Windows environments by providing remote file sharing, printer access and authentication services between HP-UX and Windows systems.

HPE CIFS includes both Client and Server bundles for HP-UX. The CIFS Client allows HP-UX systems to mount file systems on Windows, the HPE CIFS Server, Samba, and other CIFS servers, and access them locally, in a manner similar to NFS, but with greater security. The HPE CIFS Server provides remote access to its local filesystem to Windows, the HPE CIFS Client, and other CIFS clients; Windows clients can also access the HPE CIFS Server's printers.

The CIFS products include HPE's industry-leading CIFS Unix Extensions, which allow connections between CIFS Clients and Servers to utilize Unix filesystem attributes within the CIFS protocol. The CIFS Client bundle also includes a Pluggable Authentication Module, PAM-NTLM, which allows HP-UX logins to be authenticated on a CIFS domain.

HPE CIFS Client: Features and Benefits

  • Easy out-of-the-box startup: no manual configuration required
  • Flexibility: a rich set of tunable configuration options is provided
  • High level of Unix-Windows integration through NFS-style mounting of shared filesystems on CIFS servers, such as Windows, Samba (including HPE's CIFS Server), and other vendors' implementations of CIFS servers.
  • Integration with HP-UX host environment: /etc/fstab, mount(1M) and mountall(1M), bdf(1), autofs, auto-start(etc/rc.config.d)
  • Industry standard protocols: TCP/IP, NetBIOS, CIFS, CIFS Unix Extensions, Kerberos
  • Flexible name-resolution strategies: NetBIOS broadcast, WINS, DNS
  • Support for SMB over TCP (NetBIOS-less client-server connections)
  • CIFS security: users authenticated at each server accessed
  • Kerberos authentication support; integration with system Kerberos credentials cache
  • NTLM and NTLMv2 challenge-response authentication protocol: passwords are not transmitted over network
  • Support for flexible auto-login strategies
  • CIFS oplock support
  • Microsoft Distributed File-System support
  • Dynamic Loadable Kernel Module support (11i v2 or greater)
  • Large-file support (> 4GB)
  • Support for internationalized clients: localization, Unicode
  • NTLM Pluggable Authentication Module (PAM) allows HP-UX to use CIFS domain controllers to authenticate logins (such as telnet sessions) on the HP-UX system. This makes possible global user ID and password authentication across both HP-UX and Windows, centralizing maintenance of HP-UX and Windows passwords.
  • CIFS provides easily-definable mapping between different HP-UX and Windows users.
  • No-charge product; HPE's industry-leading service and support included.

HPE's CIFS product suite is provided free with HP-UX Application Releases. It is a standard component of HP-UX 11i Operating Environments. Both CIFS Server and CIFS Client bundles are included.
