Product details and specifications

Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol for IPv6 (DHCPv6) automatically allocates reusable IPv6 addresses and reduces the cost of managing IPv6 nodes in environments where administrators need more control over the allocation of IPv6 addresses. DHCPv6 manages network resources, such as IP addresses and server addresses like Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), Domain Name System (DNS), Network Information Service (NIS), and Network Information Service Plus (NIS+), at a centralized location. DHCPv6 v1.001 was the first Web upgrade release of DHCPv6 on the HP-UX 11i v1 operating system, and was based on the DHCPv6 draft version 18.

DHCPv6 2.002/.003 is based on RFC 3315 (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol for IPv6 (DHCPv6)). Table 1 summarizes the DHCPv6 software available on different HP-UX operating systems.

Table 1: Availability of DHCPv6 on HP-UX 11i v1 and HP-UX 11i v2.

Key Features

DHCPv6 2.002/.003 supports the following features:

  • IPv6 address allocation
  • Stateful auto-configuration protocol for IPv6
  • Better performance due to multi-threaded DHCPv6 2.002/.003 server
  • Renumbering using a server initiated message exchange
  • Multiple prefixes for a link
  • Globally unique IDs for the client and server
  • DNS, SIP, NIS, and NIS+ configuration using DHCPv6
  • Authentication for RECONFIGURE messages
  • Stateless dynamic host configuration protocol service for IPv6
  • Relay agent functionality
  • Request for configuration parameters from different servers within
    the same domain
  • Configuration parameters for an individual client
  • Vendor-specific options based on user class or vendor class
  • Mechanism to automatically update the appropriate system configuration files in the client

DHCPv6 2.002/.003 conforms to the following IETF standards:

  • RFC 3315 (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol for IPv6 (DHCPv6))
  • RFC 3646 (DNS Configuration options for Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol for IPv6 (DHCPv6))
  • RFC 3319 (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCPv6) Options for Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) Servers)
  • RFC 3736 (Stateless Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) Service for IPv6)
