Enhanced AutoFS

AutoFS is a filesystem that automatically mounts directories as they are accessed and unmounts them when they are no longer needed.  Enhanced AutoFS provides improvements in reliability and performance over other currently offered automounting facilities on HP-UX.

Features and Benefits:

Enhanced AutoFS provides the following features and benefits over other automounting facilities on HP-UX.

  • On-demand mounting.  Enhanced AutoFS mounts only those file systems which can be accessed, whereas other automounting facilities mount an entire set of file systems, provided they are hierarchically related.  This improves the performance by preventing unnecessary mounts and unmounts.
  • Browsability.   Enhanced AutoFS allows a user to view the directories which can be mounted for an indirect map without actually having to mount them.  This would be convenient for the users to improve performance without having to force mounts and unmounts in order to view directories.
  • Concurrent mounting and unmounting.  Enhanced AutoFS performs concurrent mounts and unmounts using a multithreaded automountd daemon whereas other automounting facilities did not have this capability.  This profoundly increases performance and prevents hangs in the service if a server is unavailable.
  • NFS loopback support.  Enhanced AutoFS has the capability to use loopback NFS mounts for locally mounted file systems instead of the default LOFS mounts.  This provides increased reliability in a high availability environment.
  • CIFS Client support.  Enhanced AutoFS supports the HPE CIFS Client which has not been previously supported.

Revision History:

The B.11.11.1101.1 version of Enhanced AutoFS is primarily a defect fix release. The defect fixes are the following:

  • Fix to prevent memory leaks in automountd daemon which leads to growth in daemon size.
  • Fix to prevent uninterruptable hang and terminate the process by SIGTERM or SIGKILL signal.

    The B.11.11.0701.1 version of Enhanced AutoFS provides a fix for a defect:

    • Fix to prevent an NFS server from hanging while accessing NFS loopback mounts managed by AutoFS.

    The B.11.11.0509.1 version of Enhanced AutoFS provides support for retrieving AutoFS maps from an LDAP database.  For more information, please refer to the AutoFS with LDAP Support Release Notes (pdf or html).

    The B.11.11.0503.1 version of Enhanced AutoFS is primarily a defect fix release.  The defect fixes are the following:

    • Fix to make automountd a more well-behaved daemon by closing its file descriptors.
    • Fix to prevent a panic on a system where a manual unmount of an NFS mount point was done when the mount point was mounted by Enhanced AutoFS.
    • Fix to add space to certain NOTE's output during the installation of Enhanced AutoFS.
    • Fix to bundle the Enhanced AutoFS product and all of its dependent products and patches into one bundle (thus preventing installation problems).
    • Fix to prevent automountd from leaking memory.
    • Fix to prevent a panic on a system because the Enhanced AutoFS kernel daemon was started too soon (before swap).
    • Fix to prevent a filesystem from becoming inaccessible under certain circumstances.
    • Fix to update the kernel symbolic debugging mechanism to include Enhanced AutoFS symbols.
