Product details and specifications
HPE Application Tuner Express (HPE-ATX) is a utility for HPE Linux customers to enable their applications to achieve maximum performance while running on larger x86 servers. With HPE-ATX application execution is aligned with the data in memory resulting in increased performance even on servers with four sockets. HPE-ATX is available for any HPE x86 server running Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) or SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) operating systems.

Upgrade Requirement:

HPE recommends users update to this version at their earliest convenience.

Upgrade Requirement Customer Notes:

HPE-ATX version 1.0.0 only contains a time-limited trial license for evaluation purposes. Version 1.0.1 has the ability to install a permanent license.

Fixed memory allocation problem when running multithreaded applications.

Version 1.0.1 has the ability to install a permanent license.

Added support for the HPE Integrity MC990 X Servers.

Added the new rr_pack process launch policy.

Since HPE-ATX runs alongside your application(s) no changes in your application are required to realize the performance benefits from HPE-ATX.  For example a standard Oracle Data base realized a nearly 58% increase in performance running this utility. You can see the results of this testing on the HPE benchmark site and select Superdome X

These performance gains are possible as many x86 applications in use today were designed for older 2 and 4-socket systems. No consideration for scaling these applications onto larger socket systems was designed in leading to significant application performance issues on large systems.

HPE-ATX helps applications run much more efficiently and perform better in larger system configurations.

Documentation on how to install HPE-ATX can be found in the Installing HPE-ATX document.

Documentation on how to run HPE-ATX can be found in the Using HPE-ATX document.

Reboot Requirement:

Reboot is not required after installation for updates to take effect and hardware stability to be maintained.

Install Instruction:

The HPE-ATX utility is available for download from the HPE Software Depot. From the HPE Support Center click the ‘Obtain software’ link, which will redirect to the HPE Software Depot web page. Then click the “HPE Application Tuner Express” entry and follow the instructions for downloading HPE-ATX.

Installing HPE-ATX

After downloading HPE-ATX from HPE Software Software Depot, login as the system administrator (root), download the HPE-ATX RPM to a directory on your hard drive and change to that directory.

If a prior version of HPE-ATX has been installed remove the old package with the command:

rpm -e hpe-atx

To install the new package type:

rpm -ivh hpe-atx-<version>.rpm

Alternatively you can use the yum/zypper installation tools on RHEL/SLES which also install any required dependencies:

yum install hpe-atx-<version>.rpm          # RHEL

zypper install hpe-atx-<version>.rpm      # SLES

Additional documentation on how to install HPE-ATX can be found in the Installing HPE-ATX document.

HPE-ATX Licensing

HPE-ATX 1.0.1 requires licenses on a per-socket basis. When you install HPE-ATX, a free instant-on trial license valid for 60 days is installed. With this instant-on trial license, you can use the product even if you do not have a permanent license. You must obtain a permanent license before the 60 day trial period expires to continue using HPE-ATX.

Before ordering the license, determine the number of active sockets on the server and order a license for the number of sockets on your server (irrespective of the number of cores). You will also need to specify the serial number of the server when ordering the license. For servers such as Superdome X the serial number is the Complex Serial Number and is the same on all nPars configured in the server - you only need to buy one license for the server with all active sockets and can apply the same license on all nPars. You can find the serial number of the server by executing the following command on your server:  cat /sys/devices/virtual/dmi/id/product_serial

IMPORTANT: If you plan to upgrade to a new OS version, you can use the same license that you are currently using. For example, if you are upgrading from Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 to Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7, you can use the same license from Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.

Obtaining a permanent license

Before your 60 day instant-on trial license expires, you must obtain and install a permanent license to continue to use HPE-ATX beyond the 60 day trial period.

To obtain a permanent license refer to your sales representative or your contract administrator.

Installing the permanent license

After you have obtained the permanent license, follow these steps to install the new license:

1. Ensure that the file /usr/lib64/hpeovlic-atx/LicFile.txt exists.

NOTE: HPE recommends that you back up this file before installing the license.

2. Place the permanent license key in a file on the system.

3. Install the license with the following command:

hpe-atx -a <absolute path to the new license file>

On successful license installation the following message will be displayed:

hpe-atx: New license installed

For more information, see the hpe-atx(8) manpage.

Verifying the permanent license

To verify the permanent license is installed:

1. Run the following command:

hpe-atx -s

Information about the current license being used will be displayed

2. To see a list of all valid licenses installed run the following command:

hpe-atx -S

For more information, see the hpe-atx(8) manpage.
