Overview

This page discusses the availability, features, and enhancements of IPv6 in the HP-UX 11i v1, HP-UX 11i v2, and HP-UX 11i v3 operating systems.

NOTE:

The "IPv6Upgrade" product should not be installed on top of the PHNE_42470 or later 11iv3 ARPA Transport patches. The functionality provided by the "IPv6Upgrade" product is available in PHNE_42470 and later patches. However, note that the "IPv6Upgrade" installation does not stop, even if PHNE_42470 or later patch is already installed.
  1. If PHNE_42470 or later ARPA Transport patch is selected for installation when you perform a cold installation of HP-UX 11iv3 March 2013 Update or earlier release, do not select "IPv6Upgrade".

If any of the above two actions are performed, "swverify" displays errors that are similar to the ones mentioned in QXCR1001262597. These errors are harmless and can be ignored.

If you have "IPv6Upgrade" product installed on the system and then install PHNE_43412, the scripts of patch PHNE_43412 automatically removes IPv6Upgrade from the system. If you rollback to an earlier ARPA Transport patch, you will not get the "IPv6Upgrade" product back.

"IPv6Upgrade" product is available in all of the HP-UX 11iv3 Operating Environment until HP-UX 11iv3 March 2013 Update.

If you have installed the "IPv6Upgrade" product on the system and if you have upgraded from PHNE_41714 to PHNE_42470 and then to PHNE_43412 and then rolled back to PHNE_41714, the below two files of the "IPv6Upgrade" product may remain on the system. HPE recommends you to remove them manually.

  • /usr/sbin/ip6addrpol
  • /usr/share/man/man1m.Z/ip6addrpol.1m

"IPv6Upgrade" product will not be available for download from January 2014.

      a The IPv6 functionality in the HP-UX 11i v1, HP-UX 11i v2, and HP-UX 11i v3 operating systems are at the same level until the HP-UX 11i v3 March 2008 release. Starting with the HP-UX 11i v3 March 2008 release, HP-UX 11i v3 includes IPv6 enhancements.
b To install the Mobile IPv6 software, select the HPUXMOBILEIP product while installing any of the HP-UX 11i v2 or HP-UX 11i v3 Operating Environments (OEs).

      The following IPv6 features are common to the HP-UX 11i v1, HP-UX 11i v2, and HP-UX 11i v3 operating systems:

      • Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) Enhancements (PPPv6 and PPPoE)
      • Router Advertisement Daemon
      • HP-UX Mobile IPv6

See the TOUR Transition Release Notes, for more information on PPPoE, PPPv6, Router Advertisement Daemon, and HP-UX Mobile IPv6.

This page discusses the following topics:

      IPv6 for HP-UX 11i v3

The IPv6 functionality is available as part of the core HP-UX 11i v3 operating system. The new IPv6 features in the HP-UX 11i v3 operating system are available through the IPv6Upgrade enhancement bundle.

      What Is In This Version

Starting with the B.11.31.0907 version of the IPv6Upgrade bundle, the following features are supported in the IPv6Upgrade bundle:

      • RFC 3542 (Advanced Sockets API for IPv6)
      • Configurable Policy Table Support (as mentioned in RFC 3484)
      • Anycast Address Support (as mentioned in RFC 4291)

IMPORTANT: The IPv6Upgrade bundle depends on the following patches:

      • PHNE_39203 (This patch depends on the STREAMS patch PHNE_37257)
      • PHNE_38153 (Internet Services patch)
      • PHCO_38048 (libc patch)
      • PHNE_37257 (Streams patch)

The B.11.31.0809 version of the IPv6Upgrade bundle supported the following features:

      • Support for the following RFCs:
        • RFC 4291 (IP Version 6 Addressing Architecture)
        • RFC 4213 (Basic Transition Mechanisms for IPv6 Hosts and Routers)
        • RFC 3484 (Default Address Selection for Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) )
        • RFC 3493 (Basic Socket Interface Extensions for IPv6)
        • RFC 4584 (Extension to Sockets API for Mobile IPv6)
        • RFC 4193 (Unique Local IPv6 Unicast Addressess)
        • RFC 4443 (Internet Control Message Protocol for IPv6 (ICMPv6))
        • RFC 3810 (Multicast Listener Discovery Version 2 (MLDv2))
        • RFC 3376 (Internet Group Management Protocol Version 3 (IGMPv3))
        • RFC 3678 (Socket Extension to Multicast Source Filter API)
      • Ability to Disable Autoconfiguration based on Router Advertisments
      • IPv6 over Virtual LAN (VLAN)

The B.11.31.0803 version of the IPv6Upgrade bundle supported the privacy extension to IPv6 auto-configuration feature, which is based on RFC 4941 (Privacy Extensions for Stateless Address Autoconfiguration in IPv6).

      IPv6 for HP-UX 11i v2

The IPv6 functionality is available as part of the core HP-UX 11i v2 operating system and provides the same features as in the IPv6NCF11i bundle.

NOTE: The IPv6Upgrade IPv6 enhancement bundle is not available for the HP-UX 11i v2 operating system.

      IPv6 for HP-UX 11i v1

HP-UX 11i v1 IPv6 was previously available as part of the Transport Optional Upgrade Release (TOUR) product. Currently, the IPv6 feature for the HP-UX 11i v1 operating system is available through the IPv6NCF11i enhancement bundle, and the cumulative Transport and STREAMS transition patches.

This IPv6NCF11i bundle contains the following features and enhancements:

      • Enables IPv6 on HP-UX 11i v1
      • Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) Enhancements (PPPv6 and PPPoE)
      • Router Advertisement Daemon
      • HP-UX Mobile IPv6 A.01.00

IMPORTANT: The IPv6NCF11i bundle is dependent on the following cumulative Transport and STREAMS transition patches (or their superseding patches):

      • PHNE_35351 (Cumulative transport transition patch): Contains all the Transport enhancements and defect fixes that were previously provided through the TOUR product.
      • PHNE_35453 (Cumulative STREAMS transition patch): Contains all the STREAMS enhancements and defect fixes that were previously provided through the TOUR product.

See the TOUR Transition Release Notes, for more information on Transport and STREAMS enhancements in the cumulative transition patches.
